Radio play as a space for marginalised voices to be heard – Deconstructing madness through sound and art
This artistic research project examines the relationship between voice, memory, and the space of a former social welfare institution. The project aims to create a space for reflection on the past, the body, and society's attitude towards mental health.
An artistic research project, based on the doctoral research of radio producer and internationally certified integrative psychotherapist (CIIP) Jasmina Godec at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (UL AGRFT) and carried out in collaboration with the Museum of Madness, explores voice, memory, and the space of madness.
It connects art and mental health, bringing to the fore the voices of those who have been silenced or institutionalised throughout history.
Located in the former Hrastovec-Trate Institute for the Mentally Ill and Nervous Disorders, now home to the Museum of Madness, the project uses sound workshops, testimonies, and artistic research to create a space for reflection on the past, the body, and audibility.
Through listening, dialogue, and co-creation with participants who have experienced institutionalisation, a radio play and sound installation are being created, to be presented to the public in 2026.
The project, developed under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Tomaž Gubenšek and the co-mentorship of director and dramaturge Alen Jelen, is partially co-financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia within the framework of JR-KIZ-25-26.
