A participatory radio play is being developed as part of a project led by the Museum of Madness in Trate, with Društvo Projekt Človek as project partner. Drawing on archival materials, sonic explorations of space, personal experiences, improvisation, and creative encounters, it explores the relationships between madness, being heard, and institutional memory.
A central point of departure is Cmurek Castle, the site of a former social care institution and now home to the Museum of Madness. Its history, spaces, and archival traces become part of a sonic dramaturgy that does not seek to explain or definitively define madness, but to listen to it.
The creative process brings together actors Marko Mandić, Minca Lorenci, Liza Marijina, and Žan Koprivnik, service users of Društvo Projekt Človek, an organisation supporting people with lived experience of addiction, and the project’s creative team.
The material was developed during participatory workshops held in 2025 and 2026 through listening, recording, improvisation, and work with voice.
Early excerpts from the project were presented at the Festival of Madness and broadcast on Radio Helsinki in Graz. A recording of the first pilot performance, developed from the workshops, is also available online:
The project does not define participants by their diagnoses or present their accounts as representative testimonies. Instead, it recognises them as co-creators of a shared sonic space.
The artistic research draws on Michel Foucault’s and Franco Basaglia’s critiques of institutional practices, Mladen Dolar’s philosophy of voice, Antonin Artaud’s exploration of the corporeal and sonic materiality of the voice, and radio art and sonic dramaturgy in the work of Samuel Beckett, Tim Crook, and Neil Verma.

The Museum of Madness project is co-funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia as part of its programme connecting culture and mental health. It is carried out in collaboration with Jasmina Godec as part of her doctoral artistic research at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television of the University of Ljubljana, entitled:
Radio Drama as an Artistic Medium for Reflecting on Madness: The Case of the Museum of Madness in Trate.
The research is being conducted under the supervision of Professor Tomaž Gubenšek, with dramaturg and director Alen Jelen of RTV Slovenia serving as co-supervisor.
An interactive online platform is also being developed alongside the radio play, extending the sonic exploration into the digital space.
