Many women in Styria worked as photographers, yet they often remained largely invisible. One of them was Terezija/Therese Mostler. She was born in what is today Slovenian Styria. She first ran her photography studio in Ljubljana and, from 1911 onwards, in Mureck. Political borders soon changed, but the photographer continued to work across regions, across borders, and between the Slovenian and German languages. After her death, she was largely forgotten. In recent years, cross-border activists have begun collecting Terezija/Therese Mostler’s photographs and preserving the traces of her life and work.
Following its successful presentation on International Women’s Day at the Museum of History in Graz, the exhibition on Terezija/Therese Mostler is now moving to Cmurek Castle. We are dedicating one of the castle’s rooms to the photographer, who spent much of her life in the immediate vicinity of the castle. Her photographs and portraits will be on display there.
The exhibition will also feature selected embroideries by artist Saša Bezjak, whose work was inspired by the photographs of Terezija/Therese Mostler.
You are warmly invited to the opening on Saturday, 20 June 2026, at 6:00 p.m.
A discussion about her life and work will be held with Eva Tropper from the Museum of History Graz, and Elias Dorner and Sonja Bezjak from the Museum of Madness. Interpretation in Slovenian and German will be provided by Sebastian Walcher.
The evening will continue with social gathering around a midsummer bonfire.
