Gothic architecture in Slovenia

Renovated and expanded layout of the first exhibition of Gothic architecture in Slovenia.

Renovated and expanded layout of the first exhibition of Gothic architecture in Slovenia, which was prepared in 1995 in the then Ljubljana Architecture Museum, now the Museum of Architecture and Design, as part of the Gothic in Slovenia project, in which a number of Slovenian scientific and cultural institutions participated. The exhibition was created as the second in a series of exhibitions of historical architecture in Slovenia, and in its preserved form today has a special cultural and historical significance.

On the hundredth anniversary of the birth of dr. Ivan Komelj (1923–1985), a prominent art historian, conservator and the first systematic researcher of castle architecture and Gothic architecture in Slovenia, the Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the Museum of Madness is once again presenting the exhibition to the public. The exhibition documents the intensive research of Gothic architecture in Slovenia in the second half of the 20th century and, with its location on Trata, at the same time draws attention to the importance of Cmurek Castle in the late Middle Ages, in the period of Gothic art and architecture, from the middle of the 13th century to the first decades of the 16th century. From this period, more than six churches and around two hundred castles and manors, as well as several hundred middle-class houses, have been preserved in Slovenia to this day, which were later rebuilt and equipped with new facades.
